The lake is known for its striped bass fishing. But crappie, walleye, sauger, white bass, catfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass are abundant for recreational fishing. Several boat docks, campgrounds and parks are available to its millions of recreational visitors.
Lake Cherokee is teaming with wildlife. Commonly seen residents are deer, turkey, groundhogs, numerous species of birds, and foxes. The new resident foxes came out to play on May 14th, 2008.
CHEROKEE DAM…
Cherokee Dam, completed in 1941, is 175 feet high and stretches 6,760 feet along the northwestern end of the lake. The reservoir dam collects rainfall from a 3,428 square-mile watershed, the Holston River and its tributaries.
Cherokee Lake has more than 460 miles of shoreline and a summer water level of 30,300 square acres. The flood stage elevation at summer pool is 1,073 feet above sea level. The normal winter water level varies 28-40 feet from summer levels.
Being 59 miles long, Cherokee Lake touches four east Tennessee counties; Jefferson, Grainger, Hamblen, and Hawkins. It is conveniently located just 10 miles from Interstates 40/81 and a short 27 miles from Interstate 75.
